truman.

Truman had his first {and hopefully his last} suppository this week. He bowl movements have been progressively getting further and further apart until this week he went 7 days without a 'poop'. The doctor had me give him a liquid glycerin suppository. It worked like a charm. I am hoping this won't become a weekly routine. Does anyone know of anything else that works on babies for this problem?

  1. That's a bummer! It's stressful, right?

Finn had the same problem for months. (He went nearly 2 weeks at one point.) We used pediatric glycerin suppositories too (a quarter or "chip") of the solid kind. Apparently their bodies can become dependent on them though, so we were warned against using them too often and at one point used a little bit of milk of mag in his bottles.. The good news is they tend to grow out of it! (And some doctors say that some babies just have the system of going only once a week.)

The only other thing I've heard was apple juice (suggested by 2 different doctors), which was a shocker to me because of allergies, etc. that can happen by introducing foods too early. But I guess it's a safe/trusty method??

  2. What a cute picture! I love when babies suck on their feet.

For some reason the apple juice sticks out in my mind as well, from when Anne was a baby. But I think my mom watered it down quite a bit. You could email and double check with her.

  3. Lily must have been a little older than Truman when she had this problem. I used the suppository once and vowed never again. The doctor suggested apple juice, but specific baby food flavors (peach is the only flavor I remember right now). Good luck!

  4. William was the same way... I had to give him apple juice and water- that helped. Also- prune juice... but that tastes terrible! Apple juice worked well.

  5. Brooke had that problem, but not until she was old enough to have whole milk. The only thing that worked for us was prune juice. I'd dilute it with water pretty good. More fiber is what I was told, but he's still to young for foods with fiber, right? If I calculated his age right, he should be old enough for a bit of juice? Ask your doctor.

  6. Sara is an every day pooper, but one night she was screaming hysterically and I couldn't get her to calm down. I had the idea that she may be constipated so I put a little vaseline on a q-tip put it in just like taking a rectal temperature. It worked like a charm. She pooped and was happy. I talked to the doctor about it the next time I took her in and he said it's fine to do every once in a while, but not on a regular basis because their muscles need to develop on their own. Sorry for the graphic explanation. Hope you find something that works.

As for your book club - some of those books do have swear words in them, so you may want to do a little pre-reading before you suggest them for a 'book club'. I'd had to offend anyone. Happy Reading!

  7. My daughter had the same problem too. I remember trying all sorts of "natural" ways first -- apple juice, pear juice (my Dr said this is actually the best b/c it's right next to Prune juice laxative-wise), etc... Nothing really worked for us except finally, the suppositories. She did finally grow out of it, so that is hopeful news for you, right?

  8. My friend dad is a doctor he has her add 1 tablespoon dark karo syrup to a bottle on the days the baby is constipated seems to work really well!

  9. I heard also that the pear juice works great, but you can also use miralax(over the counter fiber.) Just put a tsp in one of his bottles, if it gets to be a regular problem.
